Luiz joined Benfica back in 2006, initially on loan from Brazilian club Vitoria and in 2007 the two clubs agreed the permanent transfer of the player.
The young defender has been attracting interest from a whole host of European clubs including Manchester City and Real Madrid but it looks like Chelsea have beaten everybody to the signature of the 23-year-old.
The natural centre back has represented Brazil at U-20 level and has three full international caps to his name.
